Those stories were once relatively limited in number and everyone heard them. In modern time, there seem to be an infinite quantity of tales to tell ... on an infinite number of cable channels. Nevertheless, a few stories have grown famous enough to become part of our culture. For better or worse, they are touchstones that can be alluded to with the expectation everyone will know what you're talking about, at least for a few moments: Octomom, anyone?
